The Australian Blueprint for Career Development outlines the 11 career management competencies that individuals need to manage their life, learning and work across the lifespan.  The Blueprint has a number of applications; although its primary use is to guide the design and review of career development programs and activities. The Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA) is the national representative body of career practitioner organisations. CICA promotes and supports the career development of all Australians through its involvement in policy development and best practice.

The Professional Standards for Career Practitioners were developed by CICA following extensive consultation with professional careers associations and the careers community. The Standards were introduced in January 2006 and will be phased in until 2012.
