- Career development in 2011
"When dramatic change occurs, many of us reflect on what is really important in our lives" says Peter Tatham, Executive Director of the Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA).
During 2009 many Australians' careers and lives were impacted by the Global Financial Crisis. Although the Australian economy withstood the worldwide downturn better than most countries in 2010, Australia in 2011 is a time of opportunity for some while unemployment is still an issue for others and career advancement has again become a major career planning consideration for others.
In 2011 the floods across 3 states have impacted on the jobs or earning capacity for many Australians, both employees and employers, especially small business owners and primary producers.
For many this required changes to their plans and sometimes fear and panic can distort how we think about our lives. We can easily begin to question our own contribution and skills.
This might be an appropriate time to review your skills, including what you are good at and what you would like to do. Are there some options for making positive changes?
Most people undergoing change will almost certainly go through a range of emotions. Partners and children will be at the frontline of this experience and a commitment to support each other through this transition is a first step to managing change.
President of the Career Industry Council of Australia, Ms Bernadette Gigliotti says that change can bring renewal and new energy to new projects and roles "supporting and encouraging partners, friends and loved ones at this time can strengthen relationships".
"Setting a new direction for 2011/12 that matches your values, interests and lifestyle can turn despair into an exciting journey" said Bernadette Gigliotti.
