A BIG Thank You to all NCDW 2009 Registered Event Organisers

What a fantastic year we all had in 2009 with our National Career Development Week events throughout the year and the celebration week taking place from 18 to 24 May 2009. The NCDW team would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all who participated - your hard work, initiative and imaginative approach to career development activities really captured the interest of so many Australians. In 2009, more than 500,000 Australians participated in NCDW registered events. The year-long campaign continues in 2010, with registered NCDW activities throughout the coming months and new dynamic content continuously being developed on the website. Read on to find out more.

Defence Force Recruiting & NCDW

Hot off the press - we are thrilled to announce a new partnership relationship for 2010 between NCDW and Defence Force Recruiting. Further details will be included in the next newsletter and on the website.

Have you registered your 2010 careers events yet?

National Career Development Week 2010 invites all organisers of events with a career-related theme to register your events on our database at www.ncdw.com.au . Remember that while our celebration week will this year take place from 17 to 23 May 2010, you can register events being held at any time in the months ahead.

We had over 780 events registered during 2009 and, from the feedback we've received, 2010 already promises to be even bigger and better. Read on to find out more about some of the benefits of registering your careers event with NCDW. It's as easy as completing a simple events registration form on our website and receiving all the support we can offer to run a successful career development activity.

NCDW 2010 Event Planning & Resource Kit provided to all registered careers events

This year we've decided to bring you something new in your event kit in addition to the merchandise. As advised in the last newsletter, the event planning resources previously provided to all registered event organisers on a disc, including videos, factsheets, templates and checklists are now up on the NCDW website. For 2010 registering events, we will now be providing a fantastic new resource consisting of six short videos which communicate the High Five messages of career development in a fun and easily accessible way.

These career development videos have been developed specifically by the Team at National Career Development Week in conjunction with the Career Industry Council of Australia. The videos, presented in a cool, upbeat, and motivational style by Mark Furze (actor, musician) and Angela Bishop (Network Ten News Entertainment reporter), are supported by interviews with career development practitioners and a range of inspiring NCDW Ambassadors. The videos also include Closed Captions for the hearing impaired.

In an Australian First, the NCDW Video series is a unique communication tool especially designed to engage the 15 to 24 age group, to make them aware of the benefits of career development - what it is and how to do it. Each video may be used as an independent resource or in conjunction with any or all of the other five videos. The videos will be made available on the website later but all registered event organisers will receive it first on a special disc along with their resource kit from mid-February 2010.

The event kit continues to contain a range of helpful resources and merchandise including T-shirts, caps, calendars, notepads, pens and bookmarks - and this year the new addition of an NCDW workbook. So register early and make sure that you're one of the first to benefit from this year's event kit including the fantastic and unique new resource that is The NCDW Video Series!

More rewards for early registration of 2010 events

There's even more incentive this year to be an early bird and reap the rewards.

NCDW online resources on the website and Twitter

NCDW online resources are an interactive, regularly updated, and ongoing valuable source of career development information. The dynamic NCDW website already includes some fantastic new additions this year. Remember that great USB resource we provided in 2008, with the preloaded resource links? This became such a popular "must-have" resource that we've updated the resource links for 2010 and loaded them onto the website to be available to all in the same dynamic and interactive style as the USB. Where to find it? Check out our new "The must-have careers resources" page.

And there's so much more... There's the new "Event Planning Resources" page (previously supplied on disc), providing all those helpful NCDW planning resources in a dynamic format on the website. There's also a new Video gallery, which we're sure you'll love and find very user-friendly - and keep an eye out for that exciting new NCDW Video Series on the High Five messages of Career Development coming soon! Plus, of course, all the latest new factsheets, campaign news, careers in the news, and a range of other helpful and inspiring career development content and resources.

It's a New Year so embrace new opportunities and put the YOU in your career

Feeling restless? A whole year stretching out before you and wondering what it holds for you? Even if you're currently happy and secure in your work, learning and life, it's still wise to forward-think your career and put plans in place for the future. No matter who you are, the future belongs to those who can see it coming. This truth applies equally to business owners, with January traditionally marking an increase in job applications. Importantly, career development prospects top the criteria for job candidates considering a new employer, a new survey finds. Forty per cent of 1,300 respondents to a survey by staffing service Right Management Inc. said the potential for career development is the most important factor when choosing a new boss. Whatever your position, age, or background, whether you're an individual, a workplace, or an educator, the NCDW website has dynamic career development information and links to resources specifically tailored for YOU.

Defence Force Recruiting & NCDW

Hot off the press - we are thrilled to announce a new partnership relationship for 2010 between NCDW and Defence Force Recruiting. Further details will be included in the next newsletter and on the website.

Why is career development and NCDW important? And how can I make a difference?

Career development is the process of managing your life, learning and work. As Peter Tatham, Executive Director of the Career Industry Council of Australia explains, the quality of the career development process significantly determines the nature and quality of individuals' lives - the kind of people they become, the sense of purpose they have, and the income at their disposal. It also determines the social and economic contribution they make to the communities and groups of which they are part.

National Career Development Week (NCDW) is aninitiative of the Career Industry Council of Australia and is funded by the Federal Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). NCDW, through supporting hundreds of careers events run throughout the year, encourages all Australians to actively engage in career development and develop the skills to manage their careers, learning, work and lives in order to get the life they love.

Organisers of careers events across Australia at any time of the year are encouraged to register their events on the NCDW website to link their events to a major careers initiative. All registered events are included on the Event Search database on the website and receive free event planning resources, support materials and merchandise. Some testimonials from NCDW event organisers:

"My NCDW event was so successful that I am now based at Head Office and assisting four other institutions in WA to provide career development events for their clients. Thank you for your support." Angie, Pre-release Programs, Corrections WA

NCDW enables everyone in the community the opportunity to come together to contribute and to benefit from the experience in ways which are motivating, supportive and helpful to their career navigation and development." Leigh, on behalf of the Learning, Employment & Economic Development Group - Macquarie Fields, Housing NSW

"The Macquarie Fields Learning, Employment & Economic Development Group have successfully hosted events promoting National Career Development Week to the Macquarie Fields Community and for 2010 we are looking into extending this to all Housing NSW suburbs in the Campbelltown LGA" Amanda, Learning & Employment - Campbelltown, Housing NSW

The merchandise you sent us is really wonderful and it is greatly appreciated to have the NCDW initiative. Marla, Bendigo Senior Secondary College, VIC

"The website is excellent ... high quality resources" Sam, Career Education & Professional Development, NSW Institute of Sport

"Thank you for the support and guidance...all the materials you provided were very helpful" Pamela, Career Development Team, Centrelink ACT

Why register your career development activity?

NCDW 2010 invites all Australians to organise a career development activity, no matter how big or small, and to register your events on our Events Search database at www.ncdw.com.au . Whilst our celebration week will this year take place from 17 to 23 May 2010, you can register events being held on any date in the months ahead. Being a registered NCDW event means that YOUR event is associated with a major National Campaign.

NCDW had over 780 events registered during 2009 with more than 500,000 Australians participating and, from the feedback we've received, 2010 already promises to be even bigger and better. Each year we send out free resources, support materials and merchandise to all NCDW registered careers event organisers. All you need to do to qualify is to register your event. If you'd like to know more about this process or have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us at contact_team@ncdw.com.au
