National Career Development Week 2010 Launch inspires Steve Liebmann and an entire community
National Career Development Week last week launched its 2010 campaign, with a special community career development forum, hosted by NCDW ambassador Steve Liebmann (journalist and broadcaster) and featuring special guest speakers along with inspiring career stories from extra-ordinary local people.
Read more from our NCDW 2010 Launch event partners and speakers in the media release and take a behind-the-scenes look in the Campaign News Blog at organising the first Launch Your Future - get the life you love! Forum.
As the widely respected journalist and broadcaster of more than four decades, NCDW ambassador Steve Liebmann, told listeners of his 2UE radio show the morning after the launch, "I felt really inspired and proud to be an Australian yesterday. In spite of all the bad news about delinquent kids and bludging adults, this country's in pretty good shape - and the people I met yesterday are proof of that!"
There was overwhelming evidence at the forum of the community's commitment to building a better future for its residents and the impact of career development on individuals of all ages and career stages - as an important building block for communities.
The Launch Your Future - get the life you love! Forum, an initiative of the National Career Development Week Team, held in conjunction with the Macquarie Fields community organisations who form the Learning, Employment and Economic Development Group (LEED), shows what can be achieved when a community works together to improve the career development prospects of its residents. The Macquarie Fields community was selected for the launch event due to the outstanding progress of this community in supporting the career development of its residents through National Career Development Week activities in 2008 and 2009. The forum which took place at the Glenquarie Community Centre at James Meehan High School was a resounding success because everyone pulled together and contributed their skills, time and enthusiasm.
The Forum's guest speakers, Kate Southam (journalist/CareerOne), Captain Ben Gallacher (Defence Force Recruiting) and Troy Baverstock (NSW Institute of Sport) motivated and inspired the community audience ranging in age and career stages, by sharing their own remarkable career stories and providing practical advice. Ten local individuals told their career stories and showcased a wide range of programs, community initiatives and community partnerships - and demonstrated that there are a range of opportunities and support available to help individuals reach their potential and take control of their future. The key message that came through all these career stories was that through personal effort and determination you can overcome adversity to achieve your dreams - to get the life you love! You can read the local career stories featured in the Forum on our website.
A special thank you goes to the Principal, staff and students at James Meehan High School. The student volunteers led by Rosemarie Vujcic (Transitions Adviser) showed great initiative on the day - some budding event managers in the making! All of the community event partners, including Housing NSW, Macarthur Workplace Learning Program, NSW Department of Education and Training, James Meehan High School, TAFE NSW - South Western Sydney Institute, Macarthur Regional Organisation of Councils, WorkVentures, MAX Employment, the National Disability Coordination Officer program and Youth Off The Streets, demonstrated a passion and commitment to the success of the Forum. From the feedback at the event and since, residents of the Campbelltown local government area will be talking about the event for weeks to come and the event has strengthened relationships between the lead agencies and a whole range of community-based organisations, including businesses, non-for-profit, workplaces and educational and training programs.
You can organise a Launch Your Future - get the life you love! Forum in your community! We already have a basic template on our website to help you organise a community-based event. In the next few weeks, we'll add a Case Study on the event which will help you to hold a Launch Your Future - get the life you love! Forum in your community and you will be able to request specially branded materials including a letterhead and poster. So keep checking the NCDW website for these brand new resources.
