What a difference a week can make to careers!

Wow! What a difference a week can make to careers! Last week (17 to 23 May 2010), more than a million Australians of all ages and career stages attended National Career Development Week (NCDW) events across Australia hosted by 240 individual organisations in communities, schools, TAFE, university, industry, small business, government departments and a wide range of other organisations. Many of these organisations hosted a whole week of different activities. Your event stories and photographs are already coming in – keep sending them to contact_team@ncdw.com.au and we’ll put them up on the website. And don’t forget you can still register careers events taking place at any time throughout the year.

Fantastic to hear from so many of you that you have seen or heard our NCDW community service announcements (CSAs) on television and radio across Australia. The NCDW 2010 career development message featuring Angela Bishop and Mark Furze has already aired on Network Ten more than 300 times and in some very prominent time slots. The special NCDW message from The Wiggles featured prominently last week across all channels on the Foxtel Network. There were also at least 62 radio stations that featured the three NCDW audio career development messages.

Feedback from NCDW events

The NCDW registered activities taking place last week were in many cases oversubscribed, proving that Australians need help to make career decisions, from young people choosing school subjects and training courses to adults seeking a change of career, new opportunities or simply to improve their career prospects. NCDW registered event organisers report feedback indicates that as a result of attending these events participants have an increased understanding of the careers environment and a change in attitude and approach towards managing their own careers. In some cases, participants of NCDW registered events have even enrolled for opportunities or training courses on the spot.

We need you to tell us why the NCDW campaign should continue beyond June 2010

Event organisers will receive a two part Evaluation Form by email so keep a look out for it. We invite you to tell us why you need the NCDW campaign to continue and your input will help us to continue to support your events and provide the resources you need – so it is critical that you find a few minutes to complete the two part Evaluation Form that will be emailed to you. If you have been involved in organising an NCDW event or in some other capacity and would like to receive a copy of the Evaluation Form to complete, please let us know at contact_team@ncdw.com.au

NCDW 2010 in the media and new video resources on the website

Check out our “Latest Videos” and “Latest News” sections on the NCDW website home page and you’ll notice several new career development video and audio resources. These video and audio clips provide additional new inspiring career development resources for you and your audience.

Another new resource on the “Latest Videos” section is the video of the 2010 Launch your Future Forum. This short video of our 2010 launch event can be used with our “Community Event Template and Case Study" to help you to organise your own community event. The video includes behind the scenes footage and a short snapshot of the actual event.

Last week, NCDW Ambassadors Angela Bishop and Mark Furze were each busy sharing their career stories with the nation - courtesy of Network Ten’s The Circle and Ten’s Morning News. Angela made a special trip to Melbourne to talk about the importance of career development and Mark made the time to do an interview in Los Angeles where he’s currently pursuing his career dreams. Both video clips are now up on the NCDW website home page in the "Latest Videos" section.

One of our NCDW 2010 lead events also featured in the news last week when their local television station, NBN Television on the Central Coast, visited and ran a story about NCDW which you’ll find in the “Latest News” section on the NCDW website home page. Career Success Radio got the week of celebrations for NCDW 2010 off to a great start with an online radio show featuring a discussion on the High Five Principles of Career Development, with Career Industry Council of Australia President Bernadette Gigliotti and employment journalist (CareerOne/News Ltd) Kate Southam. You can now listen to a podcast of the show on the website. And don’t forget you can see some of the wide range of metro and local newspaper coverage on the website.
