Why is career development especially important in the GFC?
In the current economic climate and with a focus by government on protecting Australian jobs, expanding existing career services is a critical strategy of business, education and government agencies to support all Australians to manage their future.
The Career Industry Council of Australia expects that many Australians are worried about being laid off or made redundant in 2009. And almost all will go through a range of emotions. Partners and children will be at the frontline of this experience and a commitment to support each other through the transition is a good news year's resolution and a first step to managing change.
"Setting a new direction for 2009 that matches your values interests and lifestyle can turn gloom into an exciting journey" said Mike Geeves President, Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA)
Says Peter Tatham, Executive Director, Career Industry Council of Australia, "Throughout history there have always been highs and lows in the global economy. In every case, new opportunities emerge and are created. We all have to be on the lookout for opportunities that match our interests and to make sure we have the skills and experience to position ourselves to take up these opportunities when they arise or create them ourselves."
Why is career development important for me and everyone I know? As an educator what should I be telling my students?
Whether you're reading this with a view to your own career development, or as an educator, parent, or employer, the following principles can help all Australians to navigate today's ever-changing career landscape:
Recognise that the world around you is constantly changing. Be open to change and remain alert to new opportunities.
2. Learning is ongoing
Strive for continuous personal improvement. Stay motivated by learning new skills and developing new talents and be ready for future opportunities.
Don't focus on one destination only. Recognise that your career journey will be throughout your lifetime. Appreciate and value each experience along the way - even temporary opportunities may broaden your skills set.
Pursue your passion to find fulfilment. Discover ways to combine your interests with career opportunities.
Rely on the support of your family, friends, mentors, colleagues and peers. Career success can be a team effort. Your network (the people and contacts you know, both personal and business) are very useful if you are looking for a new job.
