Newsreader Challenges Misconceptions about Careers

Listen to Chris Bath talk about careers (1) (2) (3)...

Newsreader Chris Bath is always keen to challenge career stereotypes, as previously shown in her dramatic change of persona in the "Dancing with the Stars" show - this time she's learning new skills as a Champion for the National Career Development Week Campaign.

The news anchor showed she's not afraid of getting her hands dirty - with celebrity gardener Jason Hodges and community personality Fairy Sparkle in the fairy garden at Sydney Children's Hospital at Randwick. Chris is renovating her garden for her son Darcy and was keen to learn some of Jason's tricks and tips.

Chris believes it's important to keep challenging people's misconceptions about careers. Chris says that continuing to learn and integrate new skills is the perfect way to develop your dream career.

Says Chris, "I think what's understandable is that you've got mortgages and you've got kids, and you're in a job and it's solid income, but what if you're not particularly enjoying it any more? It's easier to stay in that job purely for security reasons. But the great thing about National Career Development Week is that it gives you the tools with which maybe you could reassess what you're doing."

The National Career Development Week Campaign encourages all Australians to Get the life you Love! Chris's skills event is the second in a series of three such events, designed to inspire all Australians to take on new challenges - you never know where they might take you. It follows Anthony Field (Blue Wiggle) learning professional NRL skills from famous five-eighth Benji Marshall, and the champion skills events series will conclude with Mark Furze (Actor, Home and Away) getting a boxing work-out courtesy of Anthony Mundine.

The campaign is an initiative of the Career Industry Council of Australia. President, Mike Geeves, says "Career development is all about assisting all Australians to take responsibility for their own career, and to recognise that just about everything we do, planned and unplanned, can contribute to our goals and aspirations." He added, "It's not just about careers it's about getting the life that you love!"

This year's campaign will culminate with a week of national celebrations encouraging career development across Australia from 2 to 8 June.
