Caroline Jones (Campaign Manager) Blog – 19 May 2009
- adminThis week is National Career Development Week (18 to 24 May) and what better time to take some positive steps to improve your career, your life, and your options for your future. Whatever your age or your career stage, now is the time to put the "you" back in your career! National Career Development Week is for everyone, people wanting to learn new skills, people anxious about the future or wanting to do something else and younger people who are still planning their careers. Getting involved is easy. The NCDW website has links to more than 600 events across Australia (with the number of events to choose from increasing daily) as well as career advice, information and resources. Why not ask at your child's school if they'd like to have a classroom discussion? Or ask the school to include a note about NCDW to parents via the school newsletter? Or ask your local library to put up a display of relevant books, about jobs, skills, learning and other work-related topics. Or it could be another local community venue. You are likely to find as I did that schools, libraries and other community organisations are more than happy to get involved ... My local public Library displays its career resources as an NCDW community event.
Even in a tough job climate we've all got unique skills and experiences to offer and can all take steps to better manage our future. Education is key, so take a course, write down your goals, and work towards a job that matches your interests and your lifestyle. It's never too late.
Blue Wiggle and NCDW Ambassador Anthony Field says, "It's good to have a job, but a job that suits you is even better! And there's a helping hand with National Career Development Week."
Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA) Executive Director Peter Tatham agrees. He says, "Getting started and committing to it is the key. Being passive in managing your career is not an option. Think about your skills, qualities and attributes as the key products and services of you as a business of one."
National Career Development Week forms part of a larger year-long campaign and is an initiative of the Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA), supported by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).
