It's Spring, let's celebrate!

I love Spring. It's my favourite season for so many reasons... I'm definitely not a cold weather girl - at least not for extended periods anyway. I know the winters are relatively short on this side of the hemisphere, I know this having previously lived and worked in London, but I still hold out all winter for the warmer temperatures and sunnier skies that Spring brings. I simply can't help it. Spring means living more of your life outdoors, eating alfresco, the beach for a swim, enjoying altogether more of the Australian lifestyle. And it's only a hop, skip, and a jump until Christmas ... did I mention I also love Christmas?!

Spring is also a time of new beginnings. As if to prove my point, my son was born in the Spring. It's a time full of promise when anything seems possible and - this is the important bit - you actually get things done! No wonder doing a "spring clean" has taken on a wider meaning these days. It's become synonymous with renewal, a sweeping out with the old and in with the new. It's a time to spring into action.

For National Career Development Week (NCDW) too, Spring is a time when plans become action. It's when the NCDW website gets its annual Spring clean, new support materials and resources are conceived for the year ahead, the annual lead event begins to take shape, and so much more. I'm delighted to announce that Steve Liebmann will again be the voice of NCDW 2010 public information messages early next year and will host our 2010 special community event (more details in the coming months). You heard it here first. Along with Steve, there's something special planned this year to share the career insights of an even wider range of high profile Australian achievers. But I'll bring you more NCDW news as it happens.

Elsewhere in the career development sphere, Spring is a time when career development conferences take place and when secondary school students make decisions about their future. It's when many start planning for the year ahead, and it's when plans for NCDW registered events are conceived. It's also the time when new tenders are being made for the provision of career services. In the business world, it can be a time when new contracts are negotiated with clients or employees and a time to re-evaluate the direction of the business. Especially, as the economic climate here and overseas begins to show signs of improvement.

For individuals, like me, there's no better time to re-evaluate the direction of your career, to ask yourself "how can I further develop my skills?" There are things we can all do to improve our employability skills and build our resilience. Getting the life you love doesn't just happen, you get there by actively managing your career and being ready for change. It's about making informed choices and working towards a career that matches your interests and your lifestyle - at any time in your life. And ... there's no better time to make a new beginning than Spring.

Have a wonderful Spring - and try something new.

National Career Development Week forms part of a larger year-long campaign and is an initiative of the Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA), with funding from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).
